Physician Mentors
for Virtual Shadowing in VIR

Are you a VIR attending, fellow, or resident interested in hosting a virtual shadowing session?

About Our Program

Who can be a mentor?

If you are a physician in vascular interventional radiology (VIR) and are passionate about medical education, we'd love to have you as a mentor!

What is virtual shadowing?

Virtual shadowing introduces undergraduates or medical students to VIR in an interactive small-group format through a 1-hour case presentation and open Q/A over Zoom. We aim to raise awareness about this field and foster mentorship relationships that are key to career success.

Why mentor?

VIR is an incredible specialty that appeals to a broad range of interests in procedural medicine! However, many pre-meds and medical students have limited exposure to this field and in-person shadowing can be inaccessible.

We are so grateful for all of our mentors who have volunteered their time to inspire and motivate future radiologists. We will use our website and Twitter account @virshadowing to publicly thank you for your support!

Who Are We?

virshadowing.com is a partnership between the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Medical Student Council (MSC) / Resident/Fellows/Students (RFS) and the West Coast VIR (WCVIR) symposium. WCVIR will certify virtual shadowing hours for students that attend and abide by the program syllabus. We plan to transition to be fully hosted the SIR in 2023.

The Virtual Shadowing Session

We are grateful for the incredible mentorship of Dr. Steven Citron, MD. Our students loved participating at his "double-feature" virtual shadowing session on January 30, 2023, video provided below with his permission.

Three Steps to be a Mentor

1) Schedule a shadowing session

Sign-up to be paired with a medical student moderator who will contact you to schedule your shadowing session.

2) Prepare a 30 min case presentation

With the help of your student moderator, prepare slides about a case that will be accessible to the shadowing students. Please include:

  • Clinical presentation
  • Pre-intervention imaging, labs
  • Clinical decision making, alternatives to intervention, long-term care plan
  • Procedure performed, including overview of steps and accompanying imaging
  • Intra-op or post-op complications
  • Post-op recovery
  • Clinical follow-up or plan for clinical follow-up

  • 3) Mentor your session

Your moderator will take care of everything else! Simply sign-on to the Zoom link they send you. Your moderator will be there to introduce you and orient the audience. Then you can present your 30 minute case followed by 30 minutes of Q&A and open discussion about VIR.

    Testimonials

I really enjoyed the opportunity to connect with the next generation of interventional radiologists. The case format and interaction with the attendees really helped revive and continue my passion for what IR has to offer. Teaching has been one of the two greatest joys of being an interventional radiologist, and it gives me hope for the future to see such a group of bright individuals interested in pushing the limits of what a true clinical IR can do. Looking forward to the next opportunity!

The virtual shadowing program was a great opportunity to connect me, an academic interventional radiologist from California, with pre-medical and medical student level trainees who crave exposure to our exciting and innovative specialty. As we all know, one of our biggest challenges in IR is getting the word out about how awesome our specialty really is. This is a part of the answer! I had a great time showing an interesting case with the attendees, fielding questions about the presentation (which required varying levels of answer complexity given the broad audience), and providing more information about my job, work-life balance, training and current practice to help the audience feel like they better understood what being an IR is all about.

Thank you for organizing the session. I'm glad the students seemed engaged with the content following the case discussion. I've had a few emails of interest, which I think speaks positively of the entire experience!
