A shared effort
How it began.
VIR Virtual Shadowing took shape in late 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, through David Mittelstein and Vraj Patel’s work on undergraduate outreach in the Society of Interventional Radiology’s medical student community. David wished he had discovered interventional radiology before his third year of medical school. Together, they wanted to give students an earlier introduction to the specialty and a chance to connect with physician mentors.
With guidance from Navjit Dullet and Geogy Vatakencherry, the team developed a pilot through the West Coast Vascular & Interventional Radiology Symposium (WCVIR). The first shadowing session took place on February 16, 2022. Physician mentors shared cases over Zoom, while student moderators organized the sessions, welcomed participants, and helped document their learning. We are grateful to the mentors, volunteers, and participants who turned that idea into a community.
