What is Vascular & Interventional Radiology?

Vascular & Interventional Radiology (VIR) is the newest, most technologically advanced specialty in medicine. Vascular & interventional radiologists use imaging to perform incredibly minimally-invasive interventions. Patients often go home the same-day and usually require nothing more than a band-aid to cover the access point for the procedure.

VIR doctors can diagnose and treat diseases in virtually every organ system. This means that their days never get boring! They can biopsy a renal mass, treat liver cancer, remove a pulmonary embolus, and coil off a cerebral aneurysm, all before lunch!

VIR is an incredible specialty to shadow. Everything is projected on a large screen, so you get a great view of the action! The numerous pictures and videos from each case also makes it perfect for virtual shadowing.

About the Program

In partnership with the West Coast VIR (WCVIR) symposium, and the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Resident, Fellows, and Students Section, this project was founded to offer students the chance to shadow this amazing specialty. We recognize that many students may not have shadowing opportunities in VIR, and we wanted this platform to connect the incredible VIR physician mentors with eager students throughout the world.

The West Coast VIR Symposium organization will certify all virtual shadowing hours for students that attend. If a student needs proof of shadowing attendance, please email us at VIRShadowing@gmail.com and we will provide a signed certificate to you! We plan to transition to be hosted by SIR in the near future.

During a virtual shadowing session, you can expect an VIR physician to take you through a patient case from the start of their symptoms to the post-procedure care. There will then be time for Q&A. Feel free to ask the mentor about their life as a physician, the VIR training pathway, or any other questions you may have!
